THREE OLD BOYS VISIT REV. R. W. PILE --- IN LEAMINGTON SPA

Brian Mack, Rev Pile, Azahim Mohamed (Standing) Senthil Sinniah

On Thursday, 17th December, 2009, Brian Mack, Azahim Mohamed and I, visited Rev. Pile at "Homewood" ---- a Methodist Old People's Home, in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire -- (about 85 miles from London.)

We spent a very pleasant and delightful one hour with Rev. Pile --- talking about our old school and of fond by-gone times. Rev. Pile was a very alert but frail 94 year old. He was quite overwhelmed when we presented him with a tin of Fortnum and Mason biscuits and a poinsettia plant. (Rev. Pile celebrated his 95th Birthday on the 12th March, 2010).

This visit was initiated by an e-mail that the late Brian Claessen sent me in November, 2009, suggesting that a group of old boys should try and visit Rev. Pile. At least, Brian knew and appreciated that we visited Rev. Pile.

Rev Wilfred Pile was appointed the Patron of the Wesley College OBU UK at its 18th Annual General Meeting held on 31st January 2010.

President’s Message - 2010

The Wesley College OBU UK is one of the oldest and active OBA's in the UK and has been in existence for the past 18 years. The OBU has continued to fulfil our main objectives which are to assist our Alma mater in education and sport facilities. Our OBU also, provides a platform to bring Old Wesleyites in the UK by organising various social and sports activities.

The OBU recently formed an Education Trust Fund to assist needy students with scholarships in order that they may continue to study at Wesley College Colombo.

Our 18th Annual General Meeting was held recently and I was happy to see a good attendance at this meeting. Old Wesleyites, who are not yet, part of our association, join us and support our Union’s activities. Your participation is essential for us to grow and develop our union, so that we can continue to undertake worthy causes and assist with the development of our Alma Mater.

The union was especially happy to receive the news of our Representative at the Festival of cricket Azahim Mohamed’s election as the 21st President of this prestigious association representing the OBA’s in the UK.

Our Website which is one of the oldest amongst the Sri Lankan schools in the UK, has now been reconstructed to facilitate present needs. Towards this end my thanks and appreciation goes out to two Old Wesleyites Bunny Taylor (Toronto) and Mahendra Dissanayake (Sri Lanka) for undertaking this task successfully.

Committee Meeting and Membership:  Our Union held four formal meetings at Committee level.

At these meetings the overriding principal that the polices of the Union should be formulated and decisions guiding us on the course of action to be taken after profound discussion.

The membership of the union closed on the 15th of November 2009 as per the constitution. The union continues to have a good crop of young Old Wesleyites in its membership, which no doubt speaks well for the future of the Union.

Our thanks must go to Membership Secretary, Senthil Sinniah

Social Event: The 17th Annual Double Ball was held on Saturday 26th September 2009 at Holiday Inn London, Brentford Lock, High Street, Brentford Middlesex TW8 8JZ. In Memoriam:

Our Patron Dr Louis Adhihetty a former Principal of Wesley College passed away last year. Dr Adhihetty was firstly a student at Wesley. He was an outstanding sportsman at college. He was awarded the Cambridge blue in Hockey.

It is with great sadness that we received the news of the death of Samith Pinsara Jayasena.  Samith excelled in sports at Wesley playing Rugby and cricket for the School. He was a member of the OBU UK Cricket team.

We convey our deepest sympathies to their families.

Appreciation: I must place on record our appreciation to our Patrons and to our Treasurer Tharanga

Jayasinghe who discharged his duties diligently. Our auditor for examining our books and the general membership for their support and participation in all our activities. The members of the Committee for their help and valuable advice.

I wish to pay a special tribute to our President Wimal de Silva who held this office with dignity and respect.

Senthil, Brain and Azahim met our Vice patron Rev Wilfred Pile. Rev Pile who is 90 years old is now in a care home in Stratford. He wish the OBU and its members well.

Conclusion:  The Union will continue to do good work as in the 18 years of its existence and I am sure.

My final word to all our members is that we must remain united and work with the interests of our Alma Mater primarily in mind.
