2005

Message from the President - 2005

It’s indeed an honour and a privilege to be elected the 8th President of the Wesley College Old Boys Union UK at the eleventh Annual General Meeting of the Union held on Sunday 25 January 2004.
I aim to continue in the same direction as all previous presidents, where the main objectives have always been support to our Alma Mater. Monetary assistance would continue in proportional needs of Wesley’s academic and sports requirements.
The OBU during the years have always been active in the UK. This trend will continue that the Union offers a social and sports platform to meet and greed Wesleyites both in the UK and around the world. I appeal to all Wesleyites in the UK to actively participate in all fund raising projects, and all other social and sports activities this year.
The OBU’s continued progress depends entirely on the support extended by Wesleyites in the UK. My humble request is for those Wesleyites who have yet to join the Union to do so now and make our Union stronger so that more assistance can be given to Wesley College Colombo.
This year the AGM elected a very able committee to continue the good work and I have every confident that our main objective under which this Union was formed to assist Wesley College Colombo will be successfully achieved by the Committee during the year.
And to close the message here is something we all should remember.
ANGER
Anger is a motivator, but it is clearly a very destructive force as well.
So which way are we going to use it?
Shout as loudly as you like.
Only action changes things.
With best wishes,
Ora et Labora!
Dennis Azariah

Wesley College Old Boys Union United Kingdom

Secretary’s Report for 2001/2002

Sunday 26 January 2003

The Wesley College Old Boy’s Union in the United Kingdom has reached a milestone when we celebrated our tenth year of founding of the Union. It all began in 1992 when Jai Lameer, Sam Thevathasan, S Ramakrishnan, Iqbal Cader, Harry Jaganathan and Azahim Mohamed met to form the OBU in the UK. When the first meeting was held on 7 November 1992 at the Victoria Methodist Church hall the six were full of confidence that the Union will survive the long hard road ahead and will bring out its best to assist Wesley College Colombo. This the OBU has achieved and what any achievement it has been that to in this short period of its founding.

We have assisted our Alma Mater to the tune of  £20500 (includes £3000 donated to College in December 2002 for Education/Computer needs and sport development) for education projects, sports development, new capital works programs, building and property refurbishment. The Union continues to assist the computer studies, which was incidentally started by the OBU. With the assistance of Jai lameer we were able to donate sixteen terminals to teach computer lessons to a class of 35 - 40 students. Two overhead projects we also gifted to College during the year.

The year 2001/2002 was another eventful and successful year for the OBU. We continue to maintain close relationship with Wesley College Colombo. Therefore, when we look back at the various assistance given to Wesley over the last ten years it is correct to say that the existence of the Union in the UK is more than justified. The Principal of Wesley College Colombo in his message to the OBU souvenir 2002 has praised the work of the OBU UK and in his prize day report of 4 October 2002 he has paid a glowing tribute to the OBU UK for the assistance given to Wesley.

 Committee Meeting’s and Membership

The Union held seven formal meetings of the committee, which took place in February, March, June, July, September, October, and December 2002. At these meetings we were guided by the overriding principal that the policies and strategies of the OBU should be formulated and decisions on the course of action taken after healthy discussion.

The closing date of the membership list, was 30 November 2002, which date, was extend to the 10 December 2002 at the Executive Committee meeting held on 1 December 2002. The union has 71 paid up members an increase from previous year. The Union has a good number of younger Wesleyites which agues well for the future. Our Membership Secretary M I M Lhahir should be commended for a job well done. He also, sent out two letters of reminder to all those in arrears of the Subscriptions and

also to those Wesleyites who have yet to join the Union. All of us must do our best to enrol more Wesleyites to the Union and continue to make the Union Stronger.

I also, take this opportunity to thank Dennis Azariah for arranging the venues for the Committee Meetings and for today's AGM free of charge. My thanks also go to those members who helped the Union by contributing towards photocopying, stationary, postage, and food for the meetings and other expenses which otherwise would have been a strain on the Union funds. Ronald Klyn who was elected as the Secretary at ninth AGM held in December 2001passed away on 10 April 2002. Newsletter

During the year we produced two issues of the newsletter. The newsletter helped us to keep in touch with our members informing of our activities and to solicit their participation. The editor Paul David did a grand job of producing these newsletters. The newsletter was also sent to all support groups of Wesley worldwide.

 Social Events

The Seventh Annual Carol Service was held on 16 December 2001 and was a great success. The eight Annual Carol service, which was held on Saturday 7 December 2002, was also well attended. Rex Devadson who organised this annual Joint event with Methodist OGA UK on behalf of the Wesley OBU UK did an excellent job to make this event a success. This annual joint event with Methodist OGA needs to be handled carefully, and must ensure that this event will continue in the future.

The Tenth annual Double Blue Ball 2002, which was held ‘UP MARKET’ was a resounding success.

This event was held on Saturday 26 October 2002 at Renaissance hotel Heathrow and continued to be the social highlight of the year and as accepted turned out to be an outstanding success both as an enjoyable evening and as an event to raise funds to our Alma Mater. Our Social Secretary Rex Devadason should be commended for a job well done. The committee members also played a major role in making this event a success. Due to this success the Double Blue Ball 2003 will also be held at the Renaissance Hotel Heathrow on Saturday 4 October 2003. The souvenir produced to mark this occasion continues to be of very high stranded. Iqbal Cader who took over from late Ronald Klyn as the editor of the Double Ball souvenir did an excellent job to maintain this high stranded. I must also, place on record the assistance given by our President Ananda Thevathasan to make the Double Blue Ball 2002 a success and also for his generous donation of the Air Ticket to Sri Lanka as the first prize for the Raffle draw. My thanks to Paul and Ami David for the gift of the 10th Anniversary cake. The rendering of the college song and war cry by Wesleyites at the Double Blue Ball 2002 came in for praise from many well-wishers.

Azahim Mohamed was appointed as the Chairman of the Cricket for the year 2002.This year the OBU will continue to play its part in making the FOC a success. During this meeting he handed over the cheque for £2000 to the Principal and the cheque for£1000 was handed to the President of the OWSC/Welfare. They were also very satisfied with the work done by the OBU UK over the years in assisting Wesley.

 Note of Sadness

It is with sadness that the Union received the news of the passing away of Ronald Klyn. Ronald was elected Secretary of the Union at the ninth AGM held on 9 December 2001. He was in the forefront of all the activities undertaken by the Union. He was also the editor of the Double Blue Ball souvenir which position he held for five years. Ronald also, functioned as the membership secretary and did an excellent job. Ronald was a true Wesleyite and was always there to assist whenever the call was made. Ronald passed away on 10 April 2002. In passing through life his goodness touched everyone he met even in a brief encounter. May he rest in peace.

We also, received the sad news of the death of Mr Jayantha Amarasinghe our Auditor. Jayantha will always be remembered for the assistance given to the Union even though he was not a Wesleyite.

We also remember those Wesleyites who passed away during the year and to those Wesleyites who lost their loved ones. May they rest in peace.

Appreciation

I must place on record our appreciation to our Patrons Rev William Holden and Mr C J T Thamotheram for their support and guidance. We are also, indeed grateful to our Vice patrons Rev Wilfed Pile, Dr Louis Adhihetty and the Principal of Wesley College Colombo for their support during the year. All of them have wished the OBU well and are happy with the work done to support Wesley College Colombo.

My thanks to the founding members and the past President for their support.

I thank the Treasurer who functioned as an efficient Treasurer and to the auditor Mr Balachandran for his guidance. I also, take this opportunity of thanking the members of the Committee for their support and contribution during the year.

I also wish to thank the General Membership of the Wesley College OBU (UK) for their continuing support and participation in all our activities.

I wish to pay a special tribute to our President Ananda Thevathasan he has held the office of President with dignity and respect and also instilled a sense of professionalism and purpose into all our activities.

 Conclusion

The Union continues to fulfil the objectives under which the Union was formed. The dedication to the welfare of Wesley College Colombo has been our top priority at each and every meeting of the Executive Committee. The Union continues to stand out far ahead of other OBA in the UK when it comes to assisting one’s old School.

The Union has done an excellent job during its ten years of existence and I am sure this effort will continue for many more years to come. This I am sure will be the watchword for future committees and wish the incoming committee increased success in all activities that they will be undertaking on behalf of the OBU (UK).

Finally, let me take this opportunity of wishing all of you a happy and prosperous New Year!

 May god bless you all!

 Ora et Labora!

Wesley College OBU (UK) pays tribute to Ronald Ashley Klyn

It is with sadness that the Wesley OBU (UK) received the news of the death of Ronald Klyn on 10th April 2002. Ronald was born on 1s t April 1935. He was 67 years of age when he was taken away from us. Ronald was a proud Wesleyite who spent his entire school life at Wesley. He always proudly recalled his school life and the years he spent at "Katiyakkara" where Wesley College spent its war years. Whenever the old boys of Wesley met, Ronald brought out his many nostalgic times at the alma mater. After leaving Wesley, Ronald joined the Ceylon Postal Department in the 50's and rose to the height of Post Master. He also served as Post Master in the Kandy district. Ronald and his wife Erin came to the UK in the 60's. In the UK he joined British Rail and served with them until his retirement in the 80's. Ronald was an active member of the Wesley OBU (UK), joining the Committee nine years ago. Ronald held the post of Membership Secretary for four years and during this time he has able to get many new members. Whenever a younger Wesleyite joined the union, or arrived from Sri Lanka for study, Ronald always went out of his way to see to their comforts and, if necessary, did the cleaning or applied a coat of paint to the flat where the boys were staying. He was very popular among the OBU (UK) membership. Ronald was also the popular choice to edit the OBU UK's Double Blue souvenir, which position he held for over five years. The OBU souvenir was always held as one of the best dinner dance souvenir amongst the schools in the UK. Ronald always maintained very high standards. Ronald was elected to the 9th AGM of the Wesley College OBU (UK), held in December 2001, as its General Secretary, which position he held until his untimely death. Ronald was a true Christian gentleman. He was recently appointed as one of the vergers at St Anselm's Church, Belmont. He was heavily involved with the church's many events, the most noted of which was the breakfast for the elderly, which takes place every day, and Ronald was the main organizer. Recently he also donated a bible for the chapel, which is used daily. The funeral service was held at Anselm's church Belmont on Thursday 18th April 2002. St Anselm's Church was full to capacity, a true testimony to a very popular figure. Wesley OBU (UK) was well represented at the funeral and the OBU also assisted as the pallbearers. Ronald was cremated at Breakspear Crematorium Ruislip, and his ashes buried at St Anselm's church, which he so dearly loved. Azahim Mohamed presented the tribute on behalf of the Wesley College OBU (UK). Wesley College OBU (UK) salutes and bids farewell to Ronald Klyn, a loyal Wesleyite and sincere friend. We will always remember with gratitude the selfless efforts made without any complaint by Ronald over the years to support Wesley College. He played a fair and splendid innings in line with the Spirit of Wesley Azahim Mohamed Obituaries It is with great sadness that we record the passing away of the following old Wesleyites. We offer our deepest sympathies to the members of the bereaved families. Ronald Ashley Klyn Ansar Fuard Wyn Peiris Rienzie Scharenguivel Lawson Koch We also offer our deepest sympathies to the family of Mr T Muruganathan (a Chemistry Teacher at Wesley College) who recently died in a bus accident at Mawanella.
