REPORT OF WESLEY COLLEGE PRIMARY SCHOOL

Wesley Primary is in its 3rd year at the Boys Industrial Home (BIH) site. Children from Grade 1 to Grade 3 receive their education at this branch. A total of 364 children are presently enrolled with a staff of 20 handling the work.

A security guard mans the premises and the gardens and takes care of the needs of the children.

Education:
From 2010, a bilingual system of education is being followed. General subjects are taught in mixed medium classes after which the students break-up into the three mediums (English, Sinhala and Tamil).

At present we have five Grade 1 classes, two Grade 2 classes. The original batch of students that started their education at Havelock Town campus comprises the two Grade 3 classes.

Extracurricular activities:
Many extracurricular activities have been introduced this year. Hockey, Badminton, Cricket, Basketball and Tennis where the fundamentals are taught.  In Tennis we have formed a small team that practices after school. We hope to participate in the Inter-school Mini Tennis tournament. Chess will be introduced to students during the year. Children also have the opportunity to join the Cub Pack which meets every Thursday. We have about 33 students in the pack. The Cubs have now been given the task of keeping the premises beautiful and neat.

We are proud to say that due to the donation from an old boy parent Mr. I Mohideen, instruments for a western band have been received and we will have our own band very soon.

Joint Activities under the Wesley Flag:
Wesley Primary with the students at Borella and Katunayake participated in many activities which are as follows:

·         The Annual Sports meet,

·         Founders Day celebrations, the Carol Service,

·         Fusion 2009,

·         English Day

·         Other important events.

We are also looking forward to jointly under the Wesley flag participating in the Talent Search and Fusion 2010 event.

 Our own programs:
We conduct our own programmes too. They are

·         Art and Handwork Exhibition,

·         Educational tours,

·         Campfire get together with a Carol Service,

·         Celebration of Elders’ Day with the elders in the compound,

·         Activity Day

·         Easter Service combined with the Logos School.

We take pride in stating that the first ever Junior Speech Crafter program in the history of Wesley College was conducted by this campus. This was promoted by our Principal Dr. Shanthi McLelland. This was also the first time it was conducted for this age group in the Island. The Rotary Club of Colombo North assisted us and a spectacular Awards Ceremony was held in March 2010. This programme is continuing successfully at Wesley Primary in Havelock Town.

Our Activity day this year will be conducted on an inter-house basis.

 Building Leaders for tomorrow:

Facilitating the growth of abilities as well as developing the child intellectually is another of our aims at Wesley Primary. We strive to mould the child to face the challenges of the modern world.

Discipline, leadership, and self esteem, is built through various methods. Children are challenged to participate in Spelling Bee Competitions. Presentation in all three languages and General knowledge training is conducted in parallel with the general education syllabus.

The computer lab provides students with Information Technology education to cope with modern technology.

As the children need to be trained in leadership, we have appointed children with leadership qualities as helpers to assist in maintaining discipline.

Monthly and Term end evaluations are conducted regularly for each class. On the last Thursday of every month the parents have an opportunity to meet their child’s class teacher to discuss their progress.

 Future Activities:
We are presently practicing to participate in Fusion 2010 and also our own little concert during the third term.

A Campfire with a Carol Service will be held later this year.

 Conclusion:
The Staff at Wesley Primary Havelock Town are grateful to all parents and well wishers who have given their total support and encouragement in numerous ways particularly the Principal, Vice Principal and Chaplain for their guidance at all times. It is due to team work, total commitment and dedicated service of the staff at Havelock Town that this branch of the School has ensured its progress and success. The staff have at all times done their very best to give their students a sound holistic education. This has all been possible through God’s Grace.

13 May 2010

From The Principal Wesley College Colombo

 Gentlemen,

This is to invite you to the Science Exhibition, organized by the Students & Teachers of Wesley College, scheduled to be held on the 13th & 14th of May, 2010.

This event is of great importance due to several reasons. When one considers the following points, one cannot but agree that it is of great importance to have such an event in the school calendar:

1- It will offer an opportunity for our students to put into practice what they have hitherto learnt only in classrooms. This invariably means additional reading, learning & seeking advice from those with experience & most importantly the realisation that there are certain things which cannot be learnt by books alone but needs real life experience.

2- It will open up an opportunity for our students to learn of various Organizations such as indigenous medical college , School of physiotherapy, Rabies Center, Wild Life, MRI , Medilon equipments plc , Happy life , Astro union ,Meteorology  & ETI etc., what they do, & most importantly could awaken an interest in our students when considering their future career.

3- It will offer an opportunity for our students to work closely with their teachers on their various projects. This can strengthen the relationship between the students and the teachers, as they now work hand in hand towards materializing a common goal, outside of their classroom based studies.

4- The advancement of such skills as those related to presentation, and of providing responses supportive of one's design/work etc. These are useful skills that one needs in professional life, and events of this nature are a great place to give a launching pad for future professionals studying today at Wesley College.

As such, let us encourage our students by taking time off to visit Wesley College on these days!

    Principal’s Message

The year 2010 has been unique in both challenge and opportunity.  We are inspired by the commitment of the teachers, parents, and the old boys in dealing with all fronts to support the school with a sense of urgency at this historical moment of time.  Strategic leadership from across the globe in the last twelve months has been tremendously encouraging.   Wesley stakeholders have been pulsating under a dedicated band of visionaries.  A very splendid flavour of collaboration has been seen, where all stakeholders have been advocating a unity of purpose at Wesley.  This united cooperation has tremendously helped to uplift the identity, the brand image of the school and to promote Wesley’s commitment to excellence in studies, sports and co-curricular activities. The enthusiastic and loyal students have rallied around to make the school better and stronger than ever before.  Thank you!

In the First Team, from the 2009 GCE Advanced Level batch, 7 students entered Universities in Sri Lanka and a half a dozen more enrolled in degree programs in foreign universities and many more in professional qualifying programs, especially in the field of accounting and management.  The 2009 GCE (O/L) results were recently released. The outstanding achievements of all 9 distinction by 3 students and 8 distinctions by 6 students are a good indicator of the dedication and hard work put in by the teachers and the students.  In December 2009, a total of 187 students sat for the GCE (O/L) examination, of which over 85% qualified for the GCE Advanced Level program, while 124 students obtained Distinctions (“A”) for English Language and over 85% passed in Mathematics.

This year we have recruited over 20 teacher trainees under a new program for graduate teachers, including one with a Master Degree in Science.  The objective is to help students achieve better grades and to improve our performances at the Grade 5 scholarship exam and the GCE (O/L) and (A/L) examinations.  The target is to increase the pass rate by at least another 10% points to reach a 90 to 95% in the first attempt.  More than 10 teachers in the staff have completed over 25 years of service at Wesley. Three teachers were selected to the Masters Degree programs in Science at the Peradeniya and Colombo Campus.

In English Debating, Wesley won the hearts of the judges with their persuasive arguments to win the Inter-School championships and the Law Faculty oratory competition. Proudly, one of our students made it to the prestigious National Schools debating team, which competed with the world’s best in Doha, Qatar in February 2010. The much accomplished English drama group excelled to become finalists at the Inter-school drama competition, carrying away laurels for their talented performances. The Speechcraft program run by the Rotaract Club saw over 100 Grade 1-3 students walk up the stage to deliver speeches, while the Poetry club and the English Day program saw over 200 students displaying their oratory talents. The Commerce students proudly organized the Commerce Day and the Quiz competition along with the A/L examination and Career Guidance programs, which were open to students of other schools; more than 10 schools participated in these events. Congratulations to the dedicated team of teachers who helped the students to complete these events successfully.

In the field of sports, the Rugby team is currently preparing for the Presidents Trophy “A” division championships after emerging “B” division champions last year.  The Under 10 Rugby team that remained unbeaten last year is once again preparing for the junior tournament along with the Under 14 and Under 16 teams for the forthcoming Rugby season.  Six of our athletes excelled at the District Athletic Championships to win three first places. The Fist XI Cricket team did extremely well and exceeded expectations with two outright wins and four first innings wins. Remarkably, our Table Tennis Juniors have been ranked Number One in the Island, while the seniors have the distinction of being ranked a close Second by the Sri Lanka Schools Table Tennis Association.  The Chess and Badminton teams have fared well and with the current level of participation and interest we expect the teams to do better this year.  We have re-started swimming after a lapse as well as Basketball.  The Hockey juniors and seniors played well to beat some of the more fancied teams, while the soccer has yet to prove that they are performing at their full potential.

In the realm of Scouting the 14th Colombo troop has been honoured with one of our Old Boys being appointed as the District Commissioner for Colombo District. The teachers in charge of Cub-Scouts are doing yeoman service by training over 100 primary students to obtain their Bronze, Sliver and Gold badges.

Soon we will be back to reality, all students will be competent in English along with their mother tongue and literacy and competency in mathematics will be better than the national average.  The university entrants hopefully will be doubled next year from 7 to 14. To achieve these goals, let us once again renew the blue rays of ambitions and desires of the students, unleash the passions and aspirations of parents, focus on the dedication and commitment of teachers, and let the loyal Wesleyites obsessively and compulsively stand together as one team to ensure Wesley’s future will remain true to its traditions of Wilkin, Hillard, Passmore, Moscrop, and more recently to those of Highfield, Cartman and Oorloff.

    18 April 2010

Wesley will play its first "A" Division Rugby match in the Presidents Trophy tournament on 24th April against St. Thomas, Mt. Lavania (U.14, U16, and U20). In preparation, Wesley U.20 beat Science College 27-7 in a friendly encounter last week. Wesley also easily beat the much fancied OBU team last Saturday at the Havelock grounds. The coach and two other volunteer coaches (one parent and one Wesley past captain) along with the fitness trainer believe Wesley is ready to meet and beat STC (April 24, Mt. Lavania), St. Anthony's (April 29), SPC, Kingswood, Royal, Thurstan and Dharmarajah (June 6 at Kandy) who are the leaders in the "A" division last year. Last year, Wesley won the "B" division title remaining unbeaten with a record number of points. Despite the odds, we are confident we can meet the challenge this year too.

WESLEY OBU UK - MOURNS THE DEATH OF LEGENDARY WESLEYITE AND ALL CEYLON CRICKETER BRYAN CLAESSEN - HE WILL BE SADLY MISSED! - MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE

    Dear Wesleyites,

I was twelve years old when Bryan captained Wesley ---- and he was my "hero". Two qualities that Bryan had ---his simplicity and his presence. Young as I was -- cricket mad, of course, --- Bryan always had something to say to me and the late Nalendra Abeysuriya --- who also "hero worshipped", Brian.

I had the privilege to have watched Brian play for Ceylon, (while still at college) against Pakistan.  Pakistan was captained by A.H. Kardar (an Oxford Blue) and a "feisty" character. F. C. De Saram captained Ceylon. Ceylon batted first and were soon in trouble -- against Fazal Mohammed (who was a superb "swing" bowler) and Brian came into bat at the fall of the fourth wicket --- Ceylon had only got around 75 runs. De Saram was batting at the other end. I was nervous for Bryan. However, Brian always had that quiet confidence about him. De Saram met Brian as he walked out and no doubt, gave him some "fatherly" advice.  Fazal Mohammed was bowling and Brian played and missed quite a bit. At the end of the over, Kardar (who was well known for his verbosity, told Brian --- "young man, you must have said your prayers because you failed to touch the ball." (This episode was reported in the papers). However Brian had the last laugh because he went on to get 78 very good runs and with De Saram (who, I think got a century) saved Ceylon.

Brian's two brothers ---- Radley and Herman (who sadly died while still at College) were two fine cricketers themselves ---- and had the same qualities as Brian. I was proud of them as a twelve year old and I salute them, as an old Wesleyite.

I thought I should share this memory with you all --- as a tribute to Brian.

May Brian rest in Peace. My prayers are with Carol and all the family.
